Those cool mornings are a sure sign that autumn is on the way. While it might be tempting to ditch your diet when you break out the bulky sweaters, think again. Researchers advise that yo-yo dieting is as unhealthy as perpetually carrying extra pounds. Here are some ideas to help you stay fit throughout the fall and winter.
Focus on Fitness
Staying healthy doesn’t mean that you don’t get to enjoy the holidays! Think of how maintaining healthy habits makes you feel. Fitness boosts your immune system, helps reduce stress and improves memory and concentration. It also helps you look your best!
Bring healthy dishes to share
Sometimes it can seem like there aren’t any healthy options at the office party or family gathering. Don’t rely on someone else to lay out the veggie tray. If the host asks guests to bring a dish to share, try one of these alternatives to carb-laden fare.
Remember that certain beverages can be a source of empty calories and/or cause intestinal gas. Avoid carbonated beverages, mixed alcoholic drinks and fruit punches. (See our guide to Healthy Holiday Cocktails for tips on how to navigate the bar at most gatherings.)
Think ‘portion control,’ not ‘diet’
Have a piece of dark chocolate. If you’re at a party, try a bite of a couple of desserts. Just don’t eat a full portion – and don’t indulge every day. If you’re unsure of the nutritional content of a particular food, check it out using the MyFitnessPal iPhone or Android app.
One of our recent posts featured advice from French women, most of whom remain slim well into middle age and their senior years. FrenchWomenDontGetFat.com advises: “Cut back gently, especially if your problem is too much of a good thing. Salmon is a wonderful health food, but if you need half a pound to feel content, you need too much. Keep the scale handy and reduce ounce by ounce, until 4-6 oz. seems a satisfying amount to you.”
Think about why you eat
If you “soothe with food,” think of ways to feel better without inhaling a bag of chips. It can be difficult to relax if you have a looming deadline or a cranky toddler. If you’re desk- or homebound, try these stretches.
In fact, it is probably a good idea to throw out the word ‘diet’ altogether. So much of our physical health is tied to the way we think and how we see ourselves. Being healthy is more about making smart decisions and lifestyle choices than counting calories and drooling over all the foods you feel like you can’t have. If you can adapt a new way of thinking about food and focus on your goals, it’ll be easier to stick to your ideal weight all year round.
