How is Gas Produced?

Intestinal gas is a common by-product of eating. Contrary to many other health conditions related to diet, a healthier diet may actually make your gas worse rather than better. Bacteria breaks down the food you eat once it gets to your colon, and that bacteria produces gas. Swallowing a lot of excess air while you eat can also cause more gas in your digestive tract. Some foods are frequent culprits for causing intestinal gas because they are more difficult for the body to digest. The bacteria in the lower intestines helps to break down certain foods into simpler substances that are more easily digested, but this process produces more gas.

Certain foods produce more gas than others. Beans and legumes are notorious for causing gas. Dairy products and foods containing the sweeteners fructose and sorbitol also produce more gas. The reason these foods cause more gas is because they are less digestible in their natural state and require more of the bacteria to break down the foods into simpler substances.
